It's summer of 2k19! Since I'm entering Art IV in the fall, this summer I have two assignments to complete; both extensions of the head and heart (fantastic four) project we closed the school year out with. I have to make two pieces this summer that are continuations of what I learned about the type of art I want to create while creating my head and heart pieces. I was supposed to break these projects up across my summer by month, posting progress each month, but with me traveling first to Italy in the beginning of the summer and then India at the end, I decided that that schedule probably wasn't going to work the greatest for me. So, here's the plan. I went to Italy and saw some amazing things, (historically, architecturally, and artistically) and I'm going to use that as a starting point for inspiration on my two pieces. I know I want to make one sculpture at least, which has to be completed while I'm at home before I head out of town, so that is going to be what I start with right now. When I'm in India, I can complete my second piece, which is going to be more of a two-dimensional image/drawing/ink kind of thing, since I really want to learn how to use my markers when I'm not drawing from life too.
So the sculpture! I completed my giant noodle like piece at the end of the school year in kind of a rush, so the final piece wasn't exactly where I wanted it to be (when is it ever), but I really really enjoyed the whole process of using my hands and whole body to make the piece as opposed to simply drawing. For this piece, I'm planning on creating clay from paper shreds and creating a form inspired by the image below (the Duomo of Siena). I'm still working on the thumbnail sketches, but I'm already experimenting with the material and process of creating it since I've never done it before.
